We are on the Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in today’s gospel, the Lord encourages us to forgive “sevety-seven times.”
That’s the reply and recommendation of the Lord to Peter. Why? Because his disciples should mirror the forgiving nature of God. Let us look at the parable: There is a king who settled accounts with his servants. One of them begged the master and his loan was forgiven. However, this servant cannot extend the same compassion to a fellow servant who owed him less than the amount he owed his master. He seized him, choked him, and had him imprisoned. The king learned of this and handed this wicked servant “to the torturers until he should pay back [his] whole debt.”
Friends, God forgives us of our sins—so that we too might become forgiving towards one another, so that we too might become faces of God’s forgiveness in our communities. God’s love has no measure. It does not expire after the seventh time.
